How To Boost Mac Speed & Improve Performance

Is your Mac slow at startup? Or at shutdown? Does it take forever to boot?

Do you want to know how to speed up your Mac computer and boost its performance?

Actually it is not so difficult; the basic principle is the same as on most operating systems. To improve your system's performance read and implement the following advice. Read on...

Is Your Mac SLOW at Startup?

(...or at shutdown?)

When you switch your Mac on how long does it take to start up?

If it is more than a minute and a half then you may easily get frustrated. Nobody likes to wait to have to access their files and surf the net. In the time it used to take for my Mac to boot I would be able make a cup of coffee! I fixed this problem by reducing the number of applications that run on start up. Change your Mac's settings so that only the most important programs start when you switch it on.

Understand that no computer will perform as fast as we want it to. Whatever processor you have in your Mac it will only be able to handle a certain amount of calculations and operations at a time. If transferring or copying files, do so in bulk rather than in individual pieces as this will minimize the time involved.

Disk Utility for Mac OS X

Do you have a clean-up Disk Utility for the Mac? If not, then you should get one.

In my opinion, the best one is MacKeeper. They have a trial version also. MacKeeper identifies unnecessary files that are clogging and filling up your hard drive. It will help you reclaim space on your hard drive for files that you really use and need.

These applications can increase Mac speed by as much as 50%. Over time your Mac's hard disk will become bloated and fragmented. Basically what this means is that the pieces of the files may not be stored in the best possible location to provide a fast performance. These Disk Utilities you just download and install in your Mac and they help bring the overall performance and response times back to almost original levels.

Another tip: - Clearing your computer's various caches, including those associated with your Internet browser, can also help speed up your Mac.

Free up Space on Your Mac

How much space do you have on your hard drive?

The closer it is too maximum capacity the more of a chance there will be of your system running slowly. Today there are plenty of cheap external drives you can use to store large files; there's no need to use up all your hard disk space. It is good to remove any software that you do not regularly use, all this is doing is taking up space in your system hard disk as well as registry.

Seeing the spinning beach ball all the time? That annoying rainbow colored beach ball of death?

If you are getting that all the time and you feel that your Mac has slowed down, then you can use mac clean-up tool and boost Mac performance.

More than 30% of disk space on an average Mac is taken up by unnecessary and junk files.

When you download (or uninstall) programs on Mac, some files are always leftover, causing your Mac to use unnecessary disk space and freeze up randomly or at startup. In order to permanently stop your Mac from freezing, you need to from time to time run Mac clean up software such as MacKeeper to optimize your file system and ensure that your Mac runs faster.

Upgrade Memory Mac

Increase Mac Ram Memory

Another consideration is the memory of your Mac. The larger the amount of RAM the better the overall speed will be. Today it would be almost worthless having a computer which contains less than 1GB RAM.

Here is another tip: You can buy memory directly from Apple, however I like to buy my memory from other memory suppliers like Mac Memory Store because the memory is the same and you can get it much much cheaper - at least 10% Off.

Finally, another thing you might want to consider is checking whether your Mac has been affected with spyware or some other malware. Yes it happens! Mac's can get viruses too.

If you liked this lens - make sure to use the Facebook and Twitter buttons at the top of the page and spread the word to your friends & let other Mac users know about it.

Now - over to you!
